Overview

MarksAI is a Chrome extension that helps you manage bookmarks with AI-powered categorization and content analysis. We are committed to protecting your privacy and ensuring transparency about how we handle your data.

Data Collection and Usage

1. Data We Collect

MarksAI collects and processes the following data locally on your device:

• Webpage Information: URLs, page titles, descriptions, and content (in markdown format) of pages you bookmark
• User Settings: AI API keys, preferred language, theme preferences, and extension configuration
• Bookmark Metadata: Categories, tags, summaries, importance scores, visit counts, and timestamps
• Favicon Images: Website icons fetched from Google's public favicon service

2. How We Use Your Data

• Local Storage: All bookmark data is stored locally in your browser using IndexedDB. We do not store your bookmarks on our servers.
• AI Analysis: When you save a bookmark, the page content (title, URL, description, and extracted text) is sent to your chosen AI provider (OpenAI, Claude, Qwen, or DeepSeek) for categorization and summarization. You must provide your own API key, and we do not have access to it.
• Content Extraction: The extension extracts page content to generate intelligent summaries. This happens locally in your browser.

3. Data We Do NOT Collect

• Personal Identification: We do not collect names, email addresses, phone numbers, or any personally identifiable information
• Browsing History: We only process pages you explicitly bookmark
• Analytics or Tracking: We do not use analytics services, tracking pixels, or collect usage statistics
• Cookies: We do not use cookies for tracking purposes

Data Storage

Local Storage (IndexedDB)

All data is stored locally in your browser using IndexedDB:

• Bookmarks: URL, title, category, tags, summary, content (markdown)
• Settings: AI API keys, theme preferences, language settings
• Categories: Category configurations and metadata

Chrome Storage API

We use chrome.storage.local to store:

• Extension settings
• User preferences

Note: Chrome Storage is synchronized only if you enable Chrome Sync in your browser settings. We do not control this synchronization.

AI Providers

MarksAI supports integration with the following 4 AI services using your own API keys:

1. OpenAI (GPT-4.1, GPT-5, o4-Mini)

   • Data sent: Page title, URL, description, extracted content
2. Anthropic Claude (Claude Sonnet 4, Claude Opus 4.1)

   • Data sent: Page title, URL, description, extracted content
3. Qwen (Alibaba Cloud - Qwen Turbo, Qwen Max)
   • Privacy Policy: Alibaba Cloud Terms of Service
   • Data sent: Page title, URL, description, extracted content
4. DeepSeek (DeepSeek Chat, DeepSeek Reasoner)
   • Privacy Policy: DeepSeek Privacy Policy
   • Data sent: Page title, URL, description, extracted content

Google Favicon Service

We use Google's public favicon service (https://www.google.com/s2/favicons) to display website icons. This service may log requests according to Google's privacy policy.

Permissions Explanation

MarksAI requires the following Chrome permissions:

• storage: Store bookmarks and settings locally in your browser
• activeTab: Read page content when you click the extension icon
• tabs: Access page URL and title for bookmarking
• scripting: Extract page content for AI analysis
• contextMenus: Add "Save to MarksAI" option to right-click menu
• notifications: Show notifications when bookmarks are saved
• host_permissions (<all_urls>): Access any webpage you want to bookmark

We only access pages you explicitly interact with (by clicking the extension icon or using the context menu).

Data Security

• Local-Only Storage: Your bookmarks never leave your device unless you use AI features with your own API key
• API Key Security: API keys are stored locally using Chrome's secure storage API and are never transmitted to us
• No External Servers: We do not operate backend servers or databases
• HTTPS Only: All external API calls (to AI providers) use encrypted HTTPS connections

Data Export and Deletion

• Export: You can export all your bookmarks and settings to a JSON file at any time via the settings page
• Delete: You can delete individual bookmarks or clear all data using the extension's settings
• Uninstall: Uninstalling the extension will remove all locally stored data from your browser

Children's Privacy

MarksAI is not directed at children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect information from children.

Updates to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Changes will be indicated by updating the "Last Updated" date at the top of this policy. Continued use of the extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
